Job Requirements

TELECOMMUNICATIONS TECHNICIAN I

The Telecommunication Technicians are involved in electrically connecting and maintaining various telecommunications apparatus and components and assembling related equipment used in providing voice, data, cable television, card systems and special circuits.

Responsibilities:
Technicians at this level function with limited supervision. Work assignments and instructions are oral and/or written and include wiring lists, installation request forms, and simple block diagrams or schematics. Work is to be performed in conformance with these instructions and industry standard and practices. Work assignments may be reviewed in progress or at the completion of each instruction depending on the complexity of the particular task. Technicians participate in maintaining the Telecommunications integrity via preventive maintenance routines and off-hour critical repair service. Provide 24X7 on-call response within 30 minutes of notification for after hour troubles. Participation in on-call rotation within the I&M group required.

Characteristic Duties:
Typical duties at this level consist of the following for each of the service offerings.

Voice
• Deliver, install, test, and maintain telephone instruments for dial tone and requested feature functionality.
• Support of the service rollout of the Converged Communications VoIP phones.
• Complete orders in Telecommunication Management Information Systems (TMIS).
• Replace defective line cards in the SL100 peripherals
• 24X7 on-call response within 30 minutes of notification for after hours troubles
• Participate in ITSS/University disaster program.
• Manage approximately 2,000 telecommunications rooms in campus and medical center buildings.
• Data
• Install, test, and maintain desktop and server data connections for the Net-to-Switch clients. This includes installing patch cords and completion of service orders in TMIS. Install and Maintain the Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) units to support Net-to-Switch and Converged Communications.
• CATV
• Install, test, and maintain subscriber locations for CATV service offerings; CATV and Cable Modem. Assist clients in connection of television, audio, and wireless networking equipment.

Card Systems
Install, test, and maintain CARDNet connections supporting the Card System Services.

Special Circuits
Install, test, and maintain circuits described in the Special Circuits offerings including fiber.

Qualifications:
• Ability to use electrical and telecommunication test equipment, such as lineman’s test set, volt/ohm meters, signal strength, return loss test equipment, spectrum analyzers, and Fluke series (DTX-1800, VoIP) testers. Working experience with common hand tools such as soldering iron, wire-wrapping tools, 110/66 punch down or connector crimping tools
• Ability to read and understand instructions from installation request forms. Interpret wiring diagrams and simple schematics to provision circuits and systems.
• Knowledge of basic electronic and telecommunication components and their nomenclature
• Knowledge of analog and digital transmission, networks, fiber, signals loss and CATV systems.
• Ability to respond with a disaster recovery team for campus and hospital communication support
• Manual dexterity and muscular strength are required on those occasions when space or other limitations prevent the use of lifting heavy devices or other forms of mechanical assistance.
• A valid California driver’s license and a good driving record at all times
• Ability to work under adverse working conditions including exposure to excessive heat, cold, dust, asbestos and hospital conditions
• Ability to lift and move heavy objects required
• High School Diploma or GED

Fiber: Fluke, Light Brigade or Corning
Leviton and Systimax Connector Training
Basic CATV and Broadband Digital Installer
Bicsi Certification: Installer Level II or high
