OVERVIEW:
The Office of the Vice Provost and Dean of Research and the Office of Development seek a seasoned and energetic fundraiser to serve as the Senior Associate Director of Development for the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment and the Precourt Institute for Energy.
The Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment and the Precourt Institute for Energy serve as the hubs for Stanford University’s broad-ranging and dynamic interdisciplinary research programs in the environment and energy. They bring together faculty and students in engineering, earth sciences, biology, social sciences, law, business and other fields to help find and advance solutions to our major environmental, sustainability and energy challenges. They each have a number of associated centers and programs designed to help accelerate innovative interdisciplinary and solutions-oriented work in these areas.

POSITION SUMMARY:
S/he will coordinate a university-wide development program to identify, cultivate and solicit prospects in support of these institutes and their related centers, programs and activities around the university. The Senior Associate Director will translate the identified needs of the institutes and programs into a comprehensive fundraising plan.
The holder of this position will be an accomplished leader who will bring energy, creativity, and professionalism to the effort of securing philanthropic support for and awareness of these Institutes. The ideal candidate is able to balance a complex set of responsibilities, foster teamwork, and promote collaboration across potentially competing interests. The candidate will demonstrate the executive talent to lead the development and outreach efforts of associated staff and faculty.
A project manager and administrative associate are available as a shared resource to provide support for this position.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
The holder of this position will lead the broader Stanford development community in seeking support for seed funds, fellowships, professorships and other programmatic support in the context of these university-wide programs. S/he will coordinate and encourage the identification, cultivation and solicitation of prospects with a focus on major and principal gifts for the institutes as well as take an active role in each of these steps. The director will work closely with the directors, executive directors, and faculty leaders of the institutes, and, working with other development staff across the campus, assure appropriate support for their fundraising related activities, including stewardship, donor relations and research. As new programmatic elements appear as new fundraising possibilities, the director will take the lead in submitting those plans for evaluation through the “Fundraising Approval and Priority Setting Process.” In general, the director will help identify and articulate the needs within the program. S/he will work with the Office of Prospect Development and fellow field staff to identify valid prospects. S/he will assist in the formulation of strategies for the cultivation and solicitation of prospects, including work with the members of the Principal Gifts staff to help conceptualize and activate solicitations for transformational gifts. S/he will participate in the actual solicitation of prospects as appropriate. The director will also work closely with the members of the associated advisory councils to help expand the network of support for the program.
S/he will help set fundraising goals and provide regular reports on progress.
The director will meet with faculty and students associated with the program to understand and be able to represent the cutting-edge work that is being done within the framework of the program.
The director will help determine what communications materials are needed for prospects, volunteers and colleagues and will take an active role in working with the Institute communications staff in developing them. As well, s/he will play an active role in the stewardship of program donors.
Depending on the fundraising needs for other programs that report to the Dean of Research, additional responsibilities related to other programs may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate ideally will have significant fundraising or other relevant experience (seven or more years) with an emphasis in major gifts; a demonstrated ability to identify and implement major gift strategic planning, preferably in an academic setting; the ability to motivate and engage through highly effective presentations and communication; a clear and confident communication style which shows spirit, enthusiasm and integrity; strong interpersonal skills and the proven ability to collaborate and build team spirit and achieve results within a diverse population which may possess competing interests, opinions and/or experiences.

• Ability to work both independently and collegially with a diverse range of colleagues, faculty, donors, volunteers and prospects in building consensus and achieving desired outcomes
• Strong skills in strategic planning with the ability to integrate a wide spectrum of objectives
• Ability to conceptualize, develop, implement and assess development activities
• Strong organizational skills and ability to anticipate issues and to solve problems creatively and effectively
• Ability to articulate and advocate for institutional goals clearly and persuasively
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to motivate staff
• Major gifts fundraising experience, 7 years or more.
• Energy, initiative, patience, persistence, creativity, drive, discretion and a sense of humor
• Ability to deal with ambiguity as new programs and paradigms emerge
• Knowledge of Stanford University
• A strong commitment to the mission of a research university
• Experience in higher education administration
• Experience in environmental fundraising; knowledge of and interest in environmental and energy issues
