Web / Drupal Developer, Precourt Institute for Energy

The Precourt Institute for Energy seeks a Website Manager / Drupal Developer to design, develop and maintain a comprehensive website about energy research, education, and outreach at Stanford. Additionally, the individual will develop and maintain several smaller sites for affiliated energy centers, including the Stanford Environment and Energy Policy Analysis Center (SEEPAC) and the TomKat Center for Sustainable Energy (TomKat). This position reports to the Associate Director of Communications, Community Building and Outreach Programs and works closely with center directors, other staff, and faculty at the Precourt Institute for Energy. Where possible, the developer will employ Stanford’s strategic direction to utilize design templates developed in conjunction with the Stanford Web Services group and to leverage content from cross-campus resources such as Explore Courses, the CAP Extension Project, and Stanford Who.

The Precourt Institute for Energy at Stanford engages in a broad-ranging, interdisciplinary program of research and education on energy – applying fundamental research to the problem of supplying energy in environmentally and economically acceptable ways, using it efficiently, and facing the behavioral, social, and policy challenges of creating new energy systems for the U.S. and the world. The institute serves as the hub of a broad and deep network of experts from various science, technology, behavioral, and policy disciplines at Stanford who are working independently and collaboratively to solve the world's most pressing energy problems.

This new position has primary responsibility to design, create and develop web services and features of new and existing websites for the institute, and the TomKat and SEEPAC centers. The individual will serve as the contact person for all matters relating to the sites; and will help guide the sites’ evolution as the institute’s and the centers’ most important public facet. The developer will work with faculty and communications staff to understand business requirements and translate that into design and implementation of new functionality and current content. Additionally the individual will analyze site usage and recommend strategies to make the site more useful to various audiences and drive people to the site.

RESPONSIBILIES:

• Lead efforts for the web presence of the institute and all the centers including site and visual design, information/content design, navigation and integration of applications; serve as the primary contact for all matters relating to the sites. Coordinate web development projects from conception through completion.
• Work with business units to update content in Drupal and develop new features to promote programs and services.
• Plan for regular updates of pages to maintain timeliness of data and perform day-to-day site maintenance; perform routine browser compatibility checks.
• Select analysis tools, analyze site traffic, and make recommendations for changes to design, navigation and/or other aspects of the site to ensure a high quality experience for the users.
• Build prototypes and implement web pages; search for, identify and optimize relevant content for web.
• Develop a working relationship with the Web “authors” throughout the University and encourage the sharing of information and ideas.
• Build the underlying website framework (primarily using Drupal) for new sites, migrate existing content to new sites, oversee timeline, permissions, roles, etc.
• Develop and maintain database for directory and other information.
• Represent the institute and the centers to other Stanford offices on matters relating to site development, design, and use.
• Ensure Web goals are in synch with infrastructure capacity.
• Keep up to date with and adhere to University IT policies and procedures. Serve as a resource and primary contact for all Web efforts.


QUALIFICATIONS:

• Significant experience in developing websites. Technical depth to engage in procedures to analyze information systems based upon Drupal and the underlying technologies that Drupal uses including PHP, HTML, CSS and Javascript/JQuery.
• Demonstrated ability and experience with Drupal, including theming
• Ability to write professional code both independently and in a team environment
• Knowledge of web accessibility best practices; experience with Unix/Linux and Windows browser compatibility issues for all platforms/major browsers
• Experience with project management, and ability to work independently and in a team environment
• Knowledge of database design and management
• Ability to multi-task in a dynamic environment, often handling competing priorities, and meet deadlines
• Knowledge and experience with Stanford’s computing and communication services and environment preferred
