PURPOSE:
The Senior Associate Director
for Learning Sciences and Technology is an active campus advocate and a resource
within the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and the office of the Vice
Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE) for research-based,
pedagogically-informed decisions about teaching and learning technologies. This
person leads a CTL team in the successful adoption and adaptation of academic
technology tools in Stanford classrooms; provides instructional design
consultation for a broad range of faculty, courses, and programs; and engages a
range of ongoing faculty scholarly efforts in this area. The Senior Associate
Director also closely collaborates with campus partners in offices responsible
for academic computing and online learning, and partners with CTL colleagues in
the Learning@Stanford initiative and other academic support programs. In
coordination with VPUE’s Director of Communications and Strategic
Initiatives—and with the overarching objective of enhanced teaching and learning
through technology—this person drives strategic planning for CTL’s digital media
outreach strategy.
SCOPE:
The Senior Associate Director for Learning
Sciences and Technology reports to CTL’s Director and has both supervisory and
budget management responsibility.
FUNCTIONS
DUTIES &
RESPONSIBILITIES:
(65%) Teaching and Learning Support
• Works
directly with high-level academic administrators and faculty to advocate for and
implement a broad portfolio of effective, pedagogically sound uses of technology
in teaching and learning. In close coordination with the Vice Provost for
Undergraduate Education and his staff, particular focus is given to SUES-related
efforts and current/future VPUE programs and grants.
• Engages, and as
appropriate, partners with a variety of distributed campus education research
efforts, with overarching goals to support those scholarly endeavors and to
ensure translation into practice of promising, research-based findings.
•
Researches, advises, and disseminates resources for the use of current and
emerging academic technologies. Evaluates the need for and implements new
program initiatives that address teaching and learning technology opportunities,
especially as instructor and learner needs change and as the technology horizon
evolves.
• Applies learning sciences expertise to academic skills resources,
Learning@Stanford, and other collaborative efforts to engage the full Stanford
community in conversations that translate learning research into active
instructor and student practice.
• Encourages and, at instructor initiative,
conducts formative evaluation of technology-enabled teaching efforts. Closely
assists faculty in pilot efforts to assess and iterate, as necessary, while they
teach in new formats.
• Designs and/or compiles relevant resources and
disseminates via a wide range of formats: e.g., oral and written presentations,
written documents, blogs, webinars, etc.
• Represents CTL and VPUE in
campus-wide technology initiatives and committees to impact policy decisions,
advocate for effective use of technology in teaching and learning, and ensure
that the needs and perspectives of faculty and students are well-represented.
• Maintains bridging, collaborative, and complementary partnerships with the
offices of the Vice Provost for Online Learning (VPOL), Academic Computing
Services (ACOMP), Vice Provost for Student Affairs (VPSA), etc. as well as the
Schools in their pedagogical efforts.
(20%) Digital Media Outreach
Strategy and Development
• Envisions, designs, and implements the strategy
for CTL’s digital media outreach initiatives (including web, social media,
mobile, etc.), in partnership with the VPUE Director of Communications and
Strategic Initiatives, to make teaching and learning resources robust and
readily accessible by both Stanford and external communities.
• Ensures, in
partnership with VPOL and other campus colleagues, that Stanford’s Teaching
Commons is an engaging and user-friendly working space for active communities of
inquiry and practice around teaching and learning.
(15%) Team Leadership
and Supervision
• Directly manages the performance and professional
development of an Associate Director team, ensuring productivity and balanced
roles in support of a range of program and unit goals.
• Guides and mentors
the work of CTL’s Teaching Commons support team, comprised of staff, students,
and other partners.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Ph.D. required
Experience:
• 5+ years in developing, refining and/or implementing
educational technologies; publication record in learning sciences and technology
highly desirable
• 3-5+ years teaching experience in a university setting;
experience in a research-intensive university highly desirable
• 3+ years in
faculty/lecturer/graduate student teaching development and/or student learning
support highly desired
• 2-3 years in program management, especially complex
projects with multiple deadlines
Knowledge:
• Deep knowledge in one
or more areas of interdisciplinary learning sciences and associated,
data-informed design of technology-enhanced learning environments in a
university setting
• General knowledge of faculty and teaching assistant
development practices and/or student learning support
Skills and
abilities:
• Demonstrated experience in innovation and creativity in making
teaching/learning technologies effective, accessible, and appealing to an
academic audience.
• Ability to form close working relationships with
faculty, administrators, and students regardless of their level of experience
and comfort with technology.
• Demonstrated understanding of
qualitative/quantitative classroom assessment tools and techniques.
•
Technical skill in multimedia course material design and development; ability to
work well with developers of such tools and materials.
• Ability to gauge
benefits and identify potential problems of current and emerging educational
technologies.
• Strong project-management and budget skills.
• Ability to
work collaboratively and constructively as a member of a team and to lead
others.
• Ability to work independently and to take the initiative,
especially in new ventures.
• Strong writing and oral communication skills
including presenting, leading workshops and seminars, inspiring and motivating,
gaining support, giving tactful feedback, and using discretion in confidential
matters.
