The System Administrator is part of the Technical Services Group in the
Land, Buildings & Real Estate (LBRE) department at Stanford
University. The department is responsible for the design, construction,
operations and maintenance of buildings, grounds, utilities, parking,
and transportation systems at Stanford. The Technical Services Group
supports all aspects of the computing infrastructure for approximately
500 users who work to ensure that LBRE provides world class services as
“caretakers of the legacy” that is Stanford University.
We are
seeking a well versed Linux system administrator, with solid
command-line experience in Red Hat and/or Ubuntu Linux (other flavors of
Linux is acceptable). This position requires hands-on experience and a
solid foundation of knowledge in networking, operating systems (Linux
and Windows), web infrastructure operations, systems administration,
storage, open source technologies and virtualization.
Required Qualifications:●In-depth knowledge of the following operating systems: RedHat Linux and/or Ubuntu Linux.
●Solid knowledge of Windows 2003, 2008 and 2012.
●Knowledge of networking concepts.
●Demonstrated
experience with common server-administration tasks for an
enterprise-level organization, including automated installation, system
upgrades and updates, software management, troubleshoot hardware and
software issues, as well as maintaining stable production, testing, and
development environments in support of approximately 120 servers (~65%
Linux).
●Substantial knowledge of Web operations, including high traffic, high availability and load balancing techniques.
●Monitor vendor resources for any required hardware upgrades, and manage hardware warranties.
●Experience implementing and maintaining open source solutions in an enterprise environment.
●Strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills.
●Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
●Effective verbal and written communication skills.
●Initiating, improving and sharing documentation.
●Securing systems by establishing and enforcing policies; defining and monitoring access.
●System level backup management, including retention policies, technologies, and best practices.
●System failure analysis and recovery; ensuring the consistency and integrity of file systems.
●Monitor
security advisories for operating system and infrastructure software,
and take appropriate actions to safeguard resources.
●Implement security patches as needed or through a change management schedule.
●Maintain operating system and supported software documentation.
●System-level housekeeping activities to ensure systems are operating at optimal levels.
●Technical support and general troubleshooting.
●Develop hardware and software configuration and installation standards.
Desired Qualifications:●Network design and implementation.
●Configuration Management System, such as Puppet.
●Establishing
a secure and resilient networking environment by designing system
configuration; directing and performing system installations; defining,
documenting, and enforcing system standards.
●Maximizing network
performance by monitoring performance, troubleshooting network problems
and outages, scheduling upgrades, and collaborating with central IT
Services network architects and operations staff.
●Monitor and ensure proper system firewall rules and security.
●Knowledge
of server virtualization, VMware/VShpere; designing, implementing and
configuring local area networks, including VLANs and redundancy is
desired.
●Familiarity with enterprise systems management entities
(enterprise storage systems, authentication, directory services,
email/web services).
●Practical experience with automated server installation.
●Experience with enterprise Storage Area Network (SAN) configuration and management.
●Experience in implementing Windows AD GPO policies.
●Familiarity with administration of network switches, routers, load-balancers, wireless, and VPN equipment.
