The Fisheries Leadership & Sustainability Forum (“Fisheries
Forum”) seeks to hire a Research Analyst to join the Fisheries Forum team. The
position will be supported by the Center for Ocean Solutions (COS). The
Fisheries Forum is a partnership among the Center for Ocean Solutions, Stanford
Woods Institute for the Environment, Duke’s Nicholas Institute for Environmental
Policy Solutions, and Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). Utilizing the resources
of its partner institutions and a network of renowned experts, the Fisheries
Forum provides education, professional development and networking opportunities
for members and staff of regional fishery management councils. Through
semiannual national Forums and regionally specific workshops, the Fisheries
Forum helps council members build leadership and decision-making skills, share
experiences, network with experts and increase their understanding of the
science, economics, and policies that are integral to fisheries management
(www.fisheriesforum.org).
COS is a collaboration between Stanford
University's Woods Institute for the Environment and Hopkins Marine Station, the
Monterey Bay Aquarium, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute to
develop practical and sustainable strategies that address the major
environmental and economic challenges facing our oceans by bringing leading
experts in marine science and policy together with decision makers.
Job
Description:
This position will provide substantive and logistical support
for a variety of Fisheries Forum projects. The Research Analyst will assist with
the design, development and implementation of forums and workshops, and engage
in regional and national policy research and networking. Specifically, the
successful candidate will track regional fishery management council activities,
conduct literature searches, prepare reports and issue papers, maintain
databases, and perform administrative duties including event planning and
logistics as needed. As part of the Fisheries Forum team, this position will
work closely with council members, council staff, state and federal agencies,
and a variety of stakeholder groups.
This position will report to the
Program Manager at COS and will work closely with the Fisheries Forum’s
Executive Director, Program Coordinator at EDF, Program Manager at the Nicholas
Institute and a number of staff across the Forum’s partner
institutions.
Key Responsibilities:
• Coordinate Fisheries Forum
activities including planning, organizing and executing events
• Assist with
the design and development of interdisciplinary curriculum for biannual Forums
and workshops
• Lead the development of case studies, reports and other
materials to support the Forum’s curriculum
• Perform in-depth topic
research, and provide interdisciplinary synthesis and objective policy
analysis
• Monitor ongoing activity across regional fishery management
councils, attend council meetings and track national activity relevant to
fishery management and ocean policy
• Build relationships and develop
professional networks with key fishery management experts, government officials,
and a variety of stakeholder groups
Experience & Qualifications:
•
A graduate degree (M.A., M.S., J.D. or PhD) in marine science or policy, natural
resource management, public policy, law or other relevant discipline
• One to
two years of relevant work or academic experience
• Excellent oral and
written communicator, with demonstrated ability to distill and communicate
complex information for non-technical audiences
• Strong organizational
talents and the ability to adhere to tight deadlines, adapt to changing and
evolving priorities, and work effectively and collaboratively with a
geographically dispersed team
• Exceptional interpersonal skills,
professionalism and sincere commitment to the policy neutrality of the Fisheries
Forum
• Strong interest or background in fisheries science, economics, law or
policy; Familiarity with US fisheries management and policy, specifically the
Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, preferred but not
required
• Willingness to travel domestically, approximately
10-15%
The position is targeted to begin June 2013. The initial term of
the Research Analyst position is for 12 months, renewable up to a two-year term
contingent on performance and fit. The position will be based at the Center for
Ocean Solutions office in Monterey, California.
