Stanford Management Company (SMC) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Private Equity Manager. SMC, a division of Stanford University, was established in 1991, and is responsible for managing the University’s $18 billion of endowment and trust assets and temporarily invested expendable funds. The majority of the University’s endowment assets are invested in a diversified portfolio of actively managed financial and real estate assets, deployed through external investment managers.
The Private Equity Manager will report to the Managing Director, Private Equity and work with the Private Equity team with investment activities related to the private equity asset class, as indicated below:
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Actively identify, research and evaluate new investment opportunities for possible selection to the portfolio, with a special emphasis on buyout funds in US and Europe • Monitor and review current managers/portfolio to ensure they are adhering to their stated investment strategy and process • Perform reviews and due diligence of prospective managers (i.e. manager meetings and conference calls, reference checks, research trips, legal review, etc.) • Manage systems to track current portfolio names and potential investment opportunities • Prepare internal review materials, i.e. investment committee memos, Board book materials, • Serve as a contributing member of the SMC investment team in reviewing and evaluating investment ideas, trends and strategies across all asset classes.
PROFILE
The ideal candidate would have the following background:
• 6-10 years of investment banking, private equity, and/or fund investing, preferably with recent experience in buyouts, either fund investing or direct investing • Strong interpersonal skills and compatibility with a team-oriented environment. The ability to manage high-level investment professionals and to demonstrate leadership. • Experience overseeing investment management relationships • Strong quantitative skills with demonstrated ability to plan, initiate, and execute complex financial and analytical studies • Experience reviewing legal investment documents and knowledge of common legal terms and fee structures • Excellent judgment, high integrity and personal values consistent with the values articulated by Stanford Management Company and Stanford University. • Proficiency using Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word as well as knowledge of other investment management software tools • Willingness to travel up to 20%-30% of time • Bachelor's degree in economics, finance, or equivalent. CFA, MBA or other advanced degree, preferred • A team orientation and strong interest in participating in the Private Investment team and supporting the work of a university endowment.
