Instructional Designer, Office of the Vice Provost for Online Learning (100% FTE)

The new Office of the Vice Provost for Online Learning seeks flexible, energetic and productive teammates to stimulate and support innovation in teaching. The Online Learning team comprises educators, instructional designers, software engineers, video and course production specialists and researchers, as well as graduate students in education, computer science, statistics and communication. Working closely with faculty, we help produce online courses, develop software platforms and support exceptional teaching.

As part of the online learning team, the Instructional Designer is responsible for developing, designing, and supporting courses for blended and online delivery.

The Instructional Designer works closely with faculty, SMEs, developers, campus community partners, and vendors to enhance pedagogy and facilitate the design and delivery of high-quality online and blended courses. Consultations from Instructional Designers are grounded in instructional design theory, models, and best practices.

The Instructional Designers are also expected to utilize project management tactics to move projects to completion and accomplish stated goals. Communication skills with a variety of constituents will be necessary to facilitate the completion of these projects.

Responsibilities

Provide instructional design consultation and instructional asset development for online and blended learning experiences. The Instructional Designer is capable of leading each stage of the ADDIE model for face-to-face, blended/hybrid, and fully online learning. The Instructional Designer will work collaboratively with the online learning team, providing expertise in online course design and delivery, while supporting the dissemination of best practices to internal and external audiences.

Key Duties:

● In collaboration with faculty, analyzes instructional goals and objectives to design, develop, and implement courses and programs according to instructional design principles, current research, and accessibility guidelines.
● Writes instructional objectives; designs lessons, and develops assessment instruments that measure students learning.
● Collaborates and communicates with faculty on selection of appropriate instructional technologies, delivery strategies, and pedagogy.
● Designs measurement instruments and analyzes qualitative and quantitative data. Conducts formative and summative evaluations to further refine and enhance online courses.
● Employs project management techniques to ensure that design and development projects complete the stated goals.
● Builds appropriate teams around course design and development projects, ensuring that all stakeholders are in communication and participating productively.
● Identifies and plans appropriate instructional design strategies and objectives based on analysis of tasks, learners, and subject matter.
● Advises faculty on key issues, including: course management, assessment methods, testing strategies, integration of media and technology into curricula, accessibility criteria, and effective teaching strategies for blended and online delivery.
● Manages online course development projects from inception to completion.
● Researches and maintains an understanding of online pedagogical methods and tools.
● In collaboration with the online learning team, develops training materials for faculty including online course development guides and effective practices documents.
● In collaboration with the Director for Technology and Teaching, conducts workshops and presentations for faculty and administrators on topics relating to online and blended learning.

Qualifications

Instructional Designers have experience creating complex and innovative learning solutions for face-to-face and online education environments. Guided by instructional design theory, models, and best practices, the Instructional Designer is a proven team player that has extensive experience in developing courses. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively and tactfully with members of the academic community is necessary.

The Instructional Designer should have an advanced degree in instructional design, instructional technology or related field, or the equivalent in professional work experience. Successful applicants will demonstrate deep knowledge of instructional design or instructional technology in higher education usually associated with 3-5 years’ experience.

Essential skills, knowledge, and experiences:

• Experience working in an environment where colleagues have diverse background & customs.
• A keen understanding of, and sensitivity to, the human factors and accessibility requirements involved in introducing educational technology.
• Demonstrated ability to manage projects and perform under a heavy workload involving a number of simultaneous initiatives.
• Formal instructional design knowledge with two to five years of professional experience as an Instructional Designer in higher education or similar environment.
• A Master's degree in Instructional Systems Technology, Instructional Design, Education Technology, or a related field is preferred.
• Experience in developing and redesigning face-to-face, fully online, and hybrid/blended courses.
• Demonstrated knowledge in curriculum design, faculty development, and instructional delivery methodologies and systems.
• Demonstrated ability to design instructional materials and interactive tools using sound principles of instructional design.
• Some project management expertise and/or experience
• Expertise with one or more content authoring tools (e.g., Camtasia, Captivate, Softchalk)
• Evaluation and implementation of social networking, online collaborative tools, and mobile solutions for education environments
• Experience with web and interactive/simulation development
• Teaching or training experience in face-to-face and online environments
• Knowledge of both PC and Mac operating systems

This is a two year fixed-term position.

The final candidate will need to successfully pass a background check to be considered for this position.
