JOB PURPOSE:

Enhance and expand outreach effort to local community based organizations, businesses, individuals and neighborhoods. Provide the community with information about the University and its resources and inform and advise the University about the needs and interests of the community.

CORE DUTIES*:

  • Develop, plan and implement new communication strategies between the office of Government and Community Relations (GCR) and its community constituencies.
  • Represent GCR at meetings and events. Research, analyze and report on issues relevant to GCR and the University’s mission in government relations. Maintain regular contacts with community leaders, university supporters and local government officials and staff.
  • Maintain, enhance and expand outreach efforts and programs aimed at community organizations, neighborhoods, key individuals and opinion makers, and the general public.
  • Develop, expand and enhance relationships with university supporters and external constituencies through communication and education initiatives. 
  • Develop and implement new modes of communication.
  • Regularly represent the university at community events, including activities such as local town hall meetings.
  • Help build coalitions with other constituencies on issues of mutual interest.
  • Maintain consistent contact with local government and community officials and staff.
  • Oversee the implementation of events and programs sponsored by GCR.
  • May direct and/or supervise staff.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and seven years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Expert knowledge of local government and familiarity with community issues/concerns.
  • Working knowledge of land use planning and CEQA.
  • Proven ability to develop, execute and critically evaluate projects and programs and provide strategic insight and approaches to issues.
  • Ability to understand and communicate complex and sometimes controversial issues.
  • Demonstrate a high level of judgment, analytical and conceptual skills. Comfortable working at both high-level strategy and detailed implementation, with ability to see the implications of decisions.
  • Superb written and verbal communication, active listening skills and the interpersonal skills needed to work with a broad range of individuals successfully, including Stanford stakeholders, local officials, business owners and the public.
  • Collaborative team player: a willingness and ability to reach out to many constituencies and understand their needs and priorities; an ability to move a group to consensus; strong interpersonal and influencing skills.
  • Ability to diplomatically resolve problems and build key relationships.

  • Mac and PC proficient and have working knowledge of Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Keynote, Constant Contact and the complete Microsoft suite of programs.
  • Experience in shaping public attitude through the effective use of print and electronic media.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, speaking.
  • Occasionally grasp forcefully, writing by hand.
  • Rarely sort/file paperwork.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May require working flexible hours, including nights and weekends. Regular travel may be required.
