Stanford Blood Center (SBC) has an immediate opening for an experienced Communications Manager. This person reports to the Administrator/CEO. The Communications Manager collaborates with Director of Donor Services, the Recruitment Manager and Marketing and Graphic Design Supervisor on a regular basis to identify public relation and departmental communication needs, ensuring initiatives are aligned and meeting the needs of SBC. Independently creates strategic and compelling communications plan to support SBC’s mission and encourage community involvement in Blood Center programs. Designs, writes, edits and oversees the production of SBC newsletters, brochures, recruitment and education materials, articles, videos, and web content, brainstorming themes and article topics with staff. In conjunction with Marketing and Graphic Design Supervisor, co-leads the production of web content and layout within the guidelines of the School of Medicine and the University. Builds and fosters collaborative relationships with all departments within SBC to stay informed and abreast of new initiatives, products, and services. Proactively identifies opportunities to support initiatives and develop internal communications for SBC departments; assisting in the development of talking points (for donor-facing staff), memos, report generation, branding/style maintenance, and inter-departmental project communications. Writes, edits, produces and distributes press releases in conjunction with Stanford University School of Medicine Office of Communication and Public Affairs (SUSoMOoC). Responsible for developing key relationships with SUSoMOoC representatives as well as members of the media (newspapers, cable TV, radio, web sites, etc.). Acts as spokesperson for SBC, arranging and holding media interviews or providing information as necessary. Supervises the activities of, and assigns work to, one Marketing and Graphic Design Supervisor and two Communication Specialists. Responsible for interviewing, hiring, training, coaching, performance management, and performance reviews.

Requirements:
BA or BS degree and a minimum 3 years related experience required. Will consider candidates without a master’s degree and blood banking experience, though both are preferred. Superior writing and editing skills and the ability to write technical materials for a lay audience required. Advanced knowledge and understanding of how to write for a variety of formats, including newspapers, magazines, newsletters (print and online), news releases, marketing collateral, other e-communications, and the web. Demonstrated public relations skills required. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; and electronic design, publishing and web authoring software programs (Adobe Creative Suite preferred). Ability to learn new software as required.

Other Relevant Information:
Will be required to comply with governmental regulations and University and Blood Center policy and strictly observe privacy and security related policies, procedures and practices to preserve the integrity and confidentiality of medical and other sensitive information pertaining to donors, patients, research subjects, and staff. Will be required to enter areas where other individuals work with human blood; potential may exist for unanticipated exposure to bloodborne pathogens by splash or spill.
