Stanford Management Company (SMC) is
seeking qualified candidates for the position of Associate, Investment
Responsibility. SMC, a division of Stanford University, was established in 1991,
and is responsible for managing the University’s $20 billion of endowment, trust
assets and temporarily invested expendable funds. The majority of the
University’s endowment assets are invested in a diversified portfolio of
actively managed financial and real estate assets, deployed through external
investment managers.
The Investment Responsibility team manages SMC’s in
house proxy voting, Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG)
research, and an active stakeholder engagement process. The Associate will play
a key role in monitoring and reporting on responsible investment and proxy
voting trends for the endowment, while working closely with Stanford’s Advisory
Panel on Investment Responsibility and Licensing (APIRL) and the Board of
Trustees’ Special Committee on Investment Responsibility (SCIR).
Responsibilities
• Analyze, research
and produce reports on social and environmental issues, sustainability standards
and proxy voting trends in the area of investment responsibility and US
endowments • Support the Assistant Manager of Investment Responsibility with
the development of strategy, planning, and implementation for both the
internship and stakeholder programs • Organize and record comprehensive proxy
voting data in the Investment Responsibility Information System (IRIS) Database,
periodically produce proxy voting reports • Represent and communicate the
Investment Responsibility process at Stanford • Communicate and coordinate
with a wide variety of stakeholders regarding Investment Responsibility at
Stanford • Monitor and research industry ESG best practices • Prepare,
create and coordinate presentations, correspondence, reports, agendas,
background materials and meeting minutes • Contribute content and maintain
Stanford’s APIRL website • Manage and plan stakeholder activities and
meetings using Stanford event resources • General office administration,
calendar and travel management
Profile
• Bachelor or Graduate degree
in Business or related area • Minimum two years experience in the field of
Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG), responsible investment, or
shareholder advocacy • Experience with different responsible investment
instruments (selection, voting, engagement, impact investing) • Ability to
condense, summarize, and abstract pertinent information and communicate findings
to a varied audience • Proven ability to manage relationships with a variety
of stakeholders including senior management, investment professionals, APIRL and
SCIR members and various student groups • Self-motivated, ability to work
effectively under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines is essential •
Excellent interpersonal, written and communication skills • Proficiency in
Word, Excel and PowerPoint required • Experience with website content
management such as Drupal preferred • A team orientation and strong interest
in supporting the IR team and the work of the university endowment •
Excellent judgment, high integrity and personal values consistent with values
articulated by SMC and University leaders • High energy level, enthusiasm,
and a sense of humor
