The Stanford Graduate School of Education (GSE) seeks a highly effective and experienced administrator to direct its staff and faculty support operations. The Assistant Dean for Staff, Faculty and Facilities Administration will take a leadership role in identifying, recommending, and establishing school administrative practices and policies and work closely with the GSE Dean and Associate Deans to execute the strategic direction of the school and ensure that the workforce is prepared to support this direction.
Reporting to the Sr. Associate Dean for Finance and Administration, the Assistant Dean will function as the School’s policy director for all human resources management issues and is charged with selecting, developing, training, and managing a high-quality, productive workforce. S/he will oversee and direct the work of the faculty affairs, administrative support, facilities, and human resources teams, supervising a team of 8-10 staff.
Job Responsibilities
40%: Human Resources
Collaborating closely with school leadership, managers and employees, the Assistant Dean provides advice, counsel and management of all aspects of the HR function including, but not limited to: organizational development and change management, employee relations; classification and compensation; recruitment and retention; performance management; and staff development.
•Manage employee recruitment, induction and retention
•Develop and manage new employee orientation and on-boarding strategies
•Provide manager support and training
•Mentor, coach, and serve as a sounding board/resource for school employees
•Manage employee involvement and engagement programs
•Build administrative capacity in support of the dean and faculty
•Work with managers to resolve employee relations issues
•Roll out University-wide human resources programs to the GSE
•Ensure that GSE is in compliance with University HR policies and State & Federal employment law
•Supervise the HR Administrator
20%: Facilities
•Direct school facilities planning and management and oversee the emergency response plan
•Develop policies on space usage
•Supervise the Facilities Coordinator
15%: Faculty Affairs
•In concert with the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, direct the school’s Faculty Affairs Office in matters of faculty recruitment, promotion, onboarding and retention
•Manage faculty conflict of interest issues
•Develop school policies related to sabbatical accrual, faculty leave, and faculty development
•Periodically review and propose changes to the faculty handbook and school bylaws
•Supervise the Faculty Affairs Officer
15%: Faculty Administrative Support
•Develop policies in support of faculty administrative support
•Ensure that faculty support work is allocated appropriately among support staff and adjust as necessary
•Supervise the faculty support team
10%: Other
•Partner with the Sr. Associate Dean in developing strategies to ensure adequate resources (human and other) to execute the Dean’s goals and initiatives
•Support the organizational development of the School’s programs and centers with respect to staffing and space
•Represent the Graduate School of Education on University committees for HR, faculty affairs, and operations
•Serve as the School’s administrative lead when the Sr. Associate Dean is not present
Requirements and Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have in-depth knowledge of university and school policies pertaining to human resources, faculty affairs and facilities; be facile with university administrative systems; and be a skilled and nuanced problem solver who can balance complex university and school policies with compassion and a commitment to finding solutions that serve the school’s interests, that of the individual, and comply with University policies. The incumbent will need to make frequent decisions that may have little or no established precedent. The ability to conduct thorough and thoughtful analyses and clearly communicate decisions will be essential to the incumbent’s success.
