Description:

The Lead Cataloging Specialist reports to the Catalog Librarian. This position performs various cataloging tasks for new materials, including: entering preliminary descriptive bibliographic records for law review symposiums and Law School theses; performing copy cataloging for case books and other treatises; bringing in bibliographic records for online treatises included in various databases and completing the record to Law Library specifications. Position provides backup in end product processing and in directing student assistants in cataloging-related projects. Duties:

Under the supervision of the Catalog Librarian:

Performs copy cataloging including case books and other treatises as assigned. Task includes review of the bibliographic records, especially checking classification numbers for accuracy and fit within the Law Library collection.
Creates initial descriptive bibliographic records for resources not found in the library catalog, including law review symposium issues and Law School theses. Performs copy cataloging for online monographic treatises as needed.
Provides backup for end product processing of cataloged materials, including final labeling.


Provides backup supervision of students working on cataloging/processing projects. In the absence of the Stacks Manager, may direct students in shelving, labeling or other cataloging-related projects.
Provides backup for the loan desk as needed.
Other projects/tasks as assigned.


Functional relationship:

Serves as a resource person for processing and catalog maintenance projects. Works closely with other staff on various cataloging projects. Serves as a liaison with Access Services to solve shelving or other issues arising from cataloging tasks.

 

Qualifications:

3 or more years cataloging experience, preferably in a law library.
Basic computer skills, including the use of applications such as MS Office, web browsers, and email; knowledge of HTML preferred.
Ability to effectively collaborate with other staff for timely cataloging, processing and routing of materials.
Ability to push heavy book trucks/shelve heavy material—up to 70 pounds.
Must have highly developed organizational and analytical skills.

 

Required:

Knowledge of AACR2, LCRI, LCC, LCSH, MARC, OCLC Bibliographic Formats and Standards.
Experience in working with OCLC Connexion and an integrated library system, preferably SirsiDynix Symphony.
Knowledge of latest developments in cataloging, including RDA and LC-PCC PS.
Reading knowledge of Western European languages, especially French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
Bachelor’s degree.
